Everything you need to know about Red Clover
What is Red Clover?
Red clover, or Trifolium pratense, is a dusky pink flowering plant native to Europe, Asia and north Africa that has been widely used in traditional medicine to treat the symptoms of menopause.
The flowers and leaves of the red clover plant contain isoflavones, which are plant compounds that have oestrogen-like effects on the body.
Red clover is often used to help alleviate the symptoms of menopause, including hot flushes, night sweats, mild anxiety, and moodiness.
What are Phytoestrogens?
Phytoestrogens are a group of naturally occurring compounds found in certain plant foods and are structurally similar to 17β-oestradiol – the most active form of oestrogen in humans. They are able to bind with alpha and beta oestrogen receptors in the body, thereby mimicking the hormone’s effects to some degree.
There are four phenolic compounds groups which are classified as Phytoestrogens:
- Isoflavones: found in legumes including red clover and soybeans.
- Stilbene: the most common stilbene group is resveratrol, found in grapes and peanuts.
- Coumestan: found in some nuts, broccoli, cabbage, and spinach.
- Lignan: sources include flaxseed, wheat flour, berries, tea, and coffee.
Food sources that are particularly high in phytoestrogens include soybeans and processed soy products such as tofu and soy milk, lentils, chickpeas, flaxseeds, sesame seeds, and some whole grains.
How does Red Clover help Relieve Symptoms of Menopause?
The isoflavones present in red clover have a similar structure to oestradiol, the most active form of oestrogen in the human body and are thought to help alleviate some of the more common vasomotor and emotional symptoms associated with menopause.
Phytoestrogens achieve this by binding to the alpha and beta oestrogen receptors in the body and mimicking some of the effects of oestradiol.
Supplementing with a high-quality red clover isoflavone supplement such as Promensil Menopause may be able to help alleviate hot flushes and night sweats, mild anxiety, and moodiness in post-menopausal women, while helping to support emotional balance, and general health and wellbeing.
Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Promensil offers two products for your convenience, Promensil Menopause with a divided dose format (take two tablets per day) or Promensil Menopause Double Strength with a convenient one tablet per day dose.
What is Menopause?
‘Menopause’ is a transitional phase in all women’s lives, marked by a range of physical, mental, and emotional changes. Many women experience some or all of the following menopausal symptoms.
Hot Flushes
Hot flushes are generally experienced as a sudden feeling of heat that spreads across the face and upper body. They usually last for several minutes and can be accompanied by sweating and an increase in heart rate.
Night Sweats
Night sweats are caused by hot flushes which occur throughout the night. They generally cause sweating and can disturb sleep.
Irregular Periods
Periods may become longer, shorter, heavier, or lighter during the period of perimenopause before they become more infrequent and eventually stop altogether. ‘Menopause’ is diagnosed after menstrual periods have completely stopped for a period of 12 months. After this time, women are considered post-menopausal.
Restlessness and Disturbed Sleep
Many women experience disturbed sleep, difficulty falling asleep or difficulty staying asleep during perimenopause and postmenopause. These symptoms can often lead to a lack of energy and feelings of fatigue throughout the day.
Mood Changes
Some women may experience mood swings and intermittent irritability during perimenopause and post menopause. These mood swings and disturbances can often be linked to a drop in oestrogen levels.
Vaginal Dryness and Discomfort
Due to hormonal changes including reduced oestrogen levels, some women may experience vaginal dryness, discomfort, and pain during sex.
Changes in Sexual Function
Some women may experience changes to sexual function, including reduced libido and levels of arousal.
Hormonal changes may cause some women to notice thinner and dryer skin as well as thinner and dryer hair.
Not all women experience all symptoms associated with menopause, and the severity and frequency of symptoms vary widely from person to person.
If you are experiencing symptoms of menopause, it is recommended to speak with your healthcare professional to discuss options for ongoing symptom management.
